How to track the value of your physical gold
To track the value of physical gold, record the weight and purity of each item you own, then multiply that against the current spot price for gold. The total changes every time the spot price moves, so the easiest way to keep it accurate is an app that fetches live gold prices and does the maths for you each time you check.
Why a gold holding’s value never sits still
Gold trades on a global market, so its price moves during the day the same way a stock does, just with smaller swings most of the time. A coin you bought six months ago is worth whatever an ounce of gold is trading at right now, adjusted for the coin’s actual gold content, not the price you paid for it. That is a different mindset to tracking a fixed asset like a savings account, where the balance only changes when you deposit or withdraw. With gold, the number moves on its own, every single day, whether you touch it or not.
This is exactly why so many people who own physical gold eventually stop trying to check the spot price by hand and calculate their totals in their head. It works for one coin. It gets tedious fast once you own a handful of pieces in different purities and weights.
The three numbers you need for each piece
Every gold item you own boils down to three facts, and you only need to record them once.
- Weight: usually in grams or troy ounces, printed on the item or its certificate.
- Purity: expressed as karats or as a fineness like .999, which tells you what fraction of the weight is actual gold rather than alloy.
- Quantity: how many of that exact coin or bar you hold, if you have more than one of the same type.
With those three things and a current spot price, you can work out what any piece is worth at any moment. The spot price is the only part that changes, so it is the only part you ever have to update, and even then only if you are checking values by hand.
Doing the maths by hand
The formula itself is simple. Take the weight in troy ounces, multiply by the purity as a decimal, then multiply by the current spot price per troy ounce. A one ounce coin at .9999 fine is worth almost exactly the spot price. A 22 karat piece, which is roughly 91.6 percent pure, is worth about 92 percent of what a pure ounce of the same weight would fetch. Repeat this for every item, add the totals together, and you have the value of your whole gold holding at that moment.
The catch is that this number is only correct for as long as the spot price stays where it was when you calculated it, which in practice is minutes. If you want a running total rather than a one-off snapshot, doing this by hand means either checking prices constantly or accepting that your figure is always a little stale.
Letting an app hold the number for you
- Add each gold item once in Net Worth Tracker, entering its weight and purity.
- The app fetches live gold spot prices and values every piece automatically, so the total updates on its own without you doing the calculation again.
- Your gold sits alongside your silver, crypto, property, savings and cash, so you see how much of your total net worth is held in metal at a glance.
- A home screen widget shows the current figure without you needing to open the app at all.
Because the entry is manual, there is nothing to link and nothing to authorise. You type in what you physically own, and the app handles the part that actually changes, which is the price.
Mistakes that quietly throw the number off
The most common error is mixing up grams and troy ounces, which are not the same unit and differ by roughly ten percent, enough to matter. The second is guessing purity instead of checking the hallmark or certificate, especially with older jewellery or foreign coins where the marking system is unfamiliar. The third is forgetting that a coin’s face value or collector premium is not the same as its metal value, so a numismatic coin can be worth more than its gold content alone would suggest. None of these are hard to avoid once you know to look for them, but they are easy to get wrong the first time you sit down to work out what a collection is really worth.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find the current value of my gold coins?
Multiply the coin’s weight in troy ounces by its purity, then by the current spot price for gold. An app that pulls live spot prices does this automatically once you enter the coin’s details.
Does the value of gold jewellery work the same way as coins?
The metal value is calculated the same way, using weight and purity against spot price. Jewellery can also carry a craftsmanship or brand premium above its metal value, which a spot price calculation does not capture.
